Huberty & Breyne Gallery Brussels presents a heritage exhibition dedicated to Maurice Tillieux from May 22 to July 18, with no commercial intent. The exhibition brings together around one hundred original works from the artist\u2019s family collection as well as from private collections. It offers a rare insight into the universe of an author whose body of work\u2014both distinctive and pioneering\u2014holds an important place in Franco-Belgian comic book history.<\/p>\n
Born in 1921 in Huy and taken prematurely in 1978, Maurice Tillieux quickly established himself as an exceptional storyteller. Both writer and artist, he developed an immediately recognizable style, driven by a keen sense of rhythm, lively dialogue, and remarkable mastery of staging and composition. His work is distinguished by a subtle balance of humor, detective intrigue, and keen observation of everyday life, giving his stories a lasting modernity.<\/p>\n
Creator of several now-iconic series, he notably introduced F\u00e9lix in the 1940s before achieving major success with Gil Jourdan, the flagship series of Spirou magazine, whose album Libellule s\u2019\u00e9vade remains one of the most emblematic examples of his narrative talent. With C\u00e9sar et Ernestine, he explored a lighter, more humorous register while retaining the precision and efficiency of his writing.<\/p>\n
The exhibition highlights these different facets through a journey structured around his major series, complemented by a selection of drawings and illustrations. The works on display testify to the richness of his universe and the coherence of a body of work that has continued to influence subsequent generations of artists.<\/p>\n
On the occasion of this exhibition, a catalogue will be published, featuring an original text by Fran\u00e7ois Walth\u00e9ry, creator of Natacha. A close friend of Maurice Tillieux, Walth\u00e9ry offers a personal and insightful perspective on the man and his work, shedding valuable light on his artistic legacy.<\/p>\n
