As SOUNDS celebrates its 40th anniversary, Welcome To Belgium and Da Bluefunk District join forces to welcome one of the artists who has embodied more than 30 years of Detroit hip-hop.<\/p>\n
This special concert celebrates the legacy of 1st Down, the legendary duo formed by Phat Kat and producer Jon Doe, later known worldwide as J Dilla. Recorded in the mid-1990s for Payday Records, these tracks captured the birth of a sound that would forever influence hip-hop production: stripped-back drums, soulful samples, deep funk grooves and uncompromising lyricism.
\nRecently released in its complete original form, 1st Down finally shines a light on this essential chapter of Detroit music history, presenting the recordings exactly as they were originally intended.<\/p>\n
