Sayun, an Indigenous Atayal girl, was once turned into a symbol of colonial propaganda through film and song under Japanese rule. In Finding Sayun, a film crew visits the tribe to investigate her story, guided by young hunter Yukan and his grandfather, the last person to have seen Sayun, back to their ancestral home. As the first theatrically released feature directed by a Taiwanese Indigenous filmmaker, the film blends warmth and humor to depict daily tribal life while reclaiming history and memory.<\/p>\n
Trained in scriptwriting and directing, Laha Mebow is considered the first female Taiwanese Indigenous director of narrative features. In 2022, she won Best Director at the 59th Golden Horse Awards for her film GAGA. She continues to weave Atayal stories through moving images.<\/p>\n
