Glasplaten en papierafdrukken, gekartelde randen en vergeelde hoeken. Niemand ondertekende ze. Niemand betitelde ze. Een familie verzamelt zich in 1914 in een fotostudio, een soldaat al in uniform tussen hen, het woord Mobilisatie boven hun hoofd gekrijt. Mannen waden een rivier in, schouder aan schouder, lachend. Een vrouw steekt een gekasseide plein over op een fiets, de sluitertijd te lang, haar oplossend in haar eigen doorgang. Een peuter staat in een deuropening en kijkt naar wie de camera vasthoudt \u2014 op de drempel, altijd net aangekomen.<br \/>\nDeze beelden waren nooit bedoeld als kunst. Dat is precies wat ze zo aangrijpend maakt. Naast het hedendaagse werk van De Ridder geplaatst, cre\u00ebren ze een onverwacht gesprek door de tijd heen. Twee manieren om hetzelfde land te zien. De objecten veranderen. Het licht verandert. Maar er blijft iets bestaan \u2014 een bepaalde manier van de wereld bewonen, bescheiden en particulier, die moeilijk te defini\u00ebren en onmogelijk te verwarren is.<br \/>\nDie hardnekkigheid, misschien, is Belgitude.<br \/>\nDe foto&#8217;s die hier worden getoond komen uit familiealbums die werden gekocht op rommelmarkten en brocantebeurzen. De oorspronkelijke eigenaars zijn ons onbekend. De mensen op de foto&#8217;s hebben nooit ingestemd met een publieke vertoning van hun beeltenis.<br \/>\nWij tonen ze met zorg en met het besef dat elke foto hier ooit priv\u00e9 was \u2014 bewaard tussen mensen die elkaar kenden, bekeken in de kring van familie of vrienden. Die intimiteit is niet vergeten.<br \/>\nHerkent u iemand op deze foto&#8217;s, dan nodigen wij u uit dit te laten weten.
