Antwerpen, 1959. Jack is een getalenteerd tenorsaxofonist. Ondanks zijn bekendheid komt hij aan de kost als dokwerker. Hij droomt ervan naar New York, het Mekka van de jazz, te reizen om er zijn idolen, de grote zwarte Amerikaanse musici te ont\u00admoeten. Maar voor die droom heeft hij geld nodig. Jacks groep, de Bop Friends, speelt in saaie tea rooms of in de big band van Mickey Bunner, een rijke, bekrompen bourgeois. De mooie en sensuele zangeres van de band, Anita, Bunners vrouw, is Jacks ma\u00eetresse. Jack ziet de mogelijkheid om uit Belgi\u00eb te ontsnappen via een radio\u00adkwis met als eerste prijs een reis naar New York Maar zijn hoop gaat de mist in en hem wacht opnieuw het geestdodende werk in de haven. Intussen gaat het leven verder. Het leven met zijn vreugden, dolle momenten en ruzies. En zijn tragedies.
\nZoals die van Jeff, de bassist, een drug\u00adverslaafde. De beeldhouwer Andr\u00e9, Jacks vriend, wiens experimenten hem de woede van zijn buren en de minachting van de academie kosten, ontmoet Lucy en probeert haar te verleiden. Maar zij is al gek op Jack. Jack en Lucy worden ver\u00adliefd, maar Jack denkt maar aan \u00e9\u00e9n ding: vertrekken naar New York Maar waar vindt hij het geld? Op dit punt komt het lot tussenbeide in de vorm van een reusachtige spin die aan boord van een bananenboot wordt aangetroffen: wie de spin vangt krijgt een beloning… een zeereis naar New York bijvoorbeeld.<\/p>\n
