Viewing of 'Ao son da nova regueifa' followed by a discussion with its director, Manolo Maseda As part of the Mestre Mateo Awards, the Instituto Cervantes in Brussels will host a cycle of Galician cinema, whose next screening will be 'Ao son da nova regueifa'. Synopsis It all begins with a search: the search for the New Regueifa. In the process, we come to realise that we are already walking to the rhythm of its music. This documentary takes us on a journey in search of the bridges built between traditional Regueifa and its more contemporary expressions, exploring the process of recovery and transformation of this art of oral improvisation in Galicia. On a journey from north to south across the country, we meet regueifeiras and regueifeiros who open the doors to the world of improvised verse, highlighting the talent, creativity and diversity that characterise today's Regueifa. Along this route from Bergantiños to Vigo, we constantly encounter a series of opposites: tradition and modernity, village and city, innate learning and pedagogy… Through passionate testimonies, improvised verses and plenty of music, we create a multifaceted portrait of contemporary Regueifa: an art with deep roots and open wings, ready to continue improvising to the rhythm of the wind. About the director Born in Burela in 1975, Manolo Maseda is a musician, composer, educator and regueifeiro. Trained at the Conservatory of Santiago de Compostela and holding a degree in History and Music Sciences from the University of Salamanca, he is a secondary-school music teacher and a passionate accordionist, the instrument through which he has forged his own artistic identity. He has participated in groups such as Fiandola, Serra-lhe aí!!! and Os Diplomáticos de Montealto, as well as collaborating with artists such as Guadi Galego, Sés, Uxía and Lamatumbá. His connection with the regueifa emerged through educational activism, particularly through the Regueifesta Project, which for more than ten years has promoted oral improvisation in verse in Galician public schools. This project was also part of the European Erasmus+ programme, connecting Galicia with territories such as Sardinia, Madeira and the Basque Country. In addition, with the trio Regueifa Ambulante, which he shares with Lupe Blanco and Josinho da Teixeira, he continues to develop a broad and contemporary form of regueifa, rooted in tradition but open to the 21st century.
