Following the resounding international success of RECLAIM, Manicomio is the new Théâtre d'1 Jour project to discover this spring ! ‘One day, perhaps soon. One day, I will pull up the anchor that keeps my ship away from the seas' (Henri Michaux, Le Clown) Manicomio (in Italian) translates as madhouse. At the end of the 1970s, Italy was facing the gradual dismantling of its psychiatric hospitals. Raymond Depardon photographed several asylums on the peninsula, focusing in particular on the final moments of the San Clemente asylum. It was in this hospital, on a small island in the Venetian lagoon, that he took photographs that convey the everyday horror of the place better than ten scholarly theses. Depardon shows us the immense distress of those being treated and the profound dismay of those around them. The subject is deeply important to the TJ1 team and its artistic director Patrick Masset. The result is Manicomio : a show about the issue of confinement today, where our institutions seem once again to be prioritising control over well-being. Created from encounters in places marked by constraint.
