Double screening of Carmen y Lola and Duas Vezes João Liberada, followed by a discussion with João Ferreira Organized by the Department of Hispanic Studies at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes, the Instituto Camões, and the Embassies of Spain and Portugal in Belgium, Panorama: Iberian Cinema returns for its second edition. The festival celebrates the film production of Portugal and Spain around a shared theme, offering multiple artistic perspectives on common realities. While the first edition was dedicated to commemorating the arrival of democracy in both countries and the struggles that made it possible, this second edition, titled Iridescent Gazes, highlights narrative diversity and aesthetic forms representing queer individuals through six feature films and eight short films, a visual arts exhibition, and discussions with artists, researchers, and activists. The festival will open with screenings of Carmen y Lola by Arantxa Echevarría and Duas Vezes João Liberada by Paula Tomás Marques, followed by a discussion with João Ferreira, artistic director of Queer Lisboa 29 – International Queer Film Festival. Synopsis of 'Carmen y Lola': Carmen lives in a Roma community on the outskirts of Madrid. Like all the women she knows, she is expected to follow a traditional path: marry young and have children. But her life changes when she meets Lola, a different kind of Roma girl who dreams of going to university, draws bird graffiti, and embraces her attraction to women. A bond grows between them that gradually turns into love. However, in a community deeply rooted in its traditions, their relationship becomes a taboo, exposing them to rejection from their families and those around them. Synopsis of 'Duas Vezes João Liberada': Liberada, a historical figure who did not conform to gender norms, was targeted by the Inquisition. When the director falls ill, the protagonist must overcome obstacles to complete the film and do justice to the legacy of its central figure.
