Dramatized reading and concert featuring works by the writer Juan Rulfo and the composer Manuel Ponce. In this literary and musical evening, we will explore the life and work of two key figures in Mexican culture: writer Juan Rulfo and composer Manuel Ponce. A Mexican writer, screenwriter, and photographer belonging to the Generation of ’52, Juan Rulfo is considered one of the most important Latin American writers of the 20th century. His reputation is built on two of his three narrative works: the short story collection El Llano en llamas, published in 1953, and his novel Pedro Páramo, published in 1955. His works blend reality and fantasy, often set in rural landscapes in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution and the Cristero War. Regarded as a legendary figure in Mexico, Rulfo described himself as introverted, shy, and enigmatic—quiet, realistic, protective of his privacy, critical, and highly creative. For his part, Manuel Ponce is considered the father of Mexican musical nationalism. He composed guitar music, piano works, songs, chamber music, and orchestral pieces, with his piano and guitar works being the most numerous and widely known. Ponce believed that composers should draw inspiration from their country’s popular music and songs, refining them and elevating them artistically while avoiding what is vulgar, crude, or unrefined. The well-known producer, screenwriter, and fiction podcast host Alberto Martínez Carcedo—winner of four iVoox Awards—together with Beatriz Gómez Alberdi, will bring Juan Rulfo and his novel Pedro Páramo to life. Meanwhile, guitarist Corentin Schlegel will perform the music of Manuel Ponce. Between the two performances, attendees will also be able to enjoy Mexican coffee. A unique experience to be carried away by the dialogue between literature and sound—between the intensity of Rulfo and the musical richness of Ponce.
