TeatroFest, the first Spanish-language theatre festival in Belgium, emerges from a unique collaboration between cultural institutions and theatre companies. Created by La Théâtral, Una Buena Obra, Tramedy and TeatroBe—united by their passion for theatre and the vibrant Spanish-language scene in the country—with the support of the Embassy of Spain and the Cervantes Institute. TeatroFest brings three days of Spanish-language theatre to Belgium with nine events celebrating performance, storytelling, and theatrical training. The festival features three stage productions and two theatre workshops, creating a space where audiences and artists can explore the richness and diversity of Spanish-language theatre. The program includes three plays presented across the festival. Pic nic, performed with English surtitles, unfolds in the middle of a war where the ordinary appears in the most unexpected place. With an innocent yet unsettling humor characteristic of teatro pánico, the play moves between tenderness and unease while subtly questioning the logic of conflict and the rules that sustain it. Performances take place on 11 and 12 June at 19:30, and 13 June at 21:00. Also with English surtitles, Teatro para minutos presents four short plays by renowned Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga: 581 Mapas, Encuentro en Salamanca, Las Películas del Invierno, and La Mujer de los Ojos Tristes. Through these brief but powerful pieces, audiences are invited to rediscover and be moved by iconic Spanish literary figures and characters. Performances take place on 11 and 12 June at 21:00, and 13 June at 19:30. The festival also presents Romeo y Julieta, Luis O’Malley’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy set in Verona. Two young lovers from rival families become victims of a cycle of hatred and violence they cannot escape. On a hot summer evening, shortly after secretly marrying Juliet, Romeo kills her cousin, triggering a chain of events driven by chance and destiny that leads inevitably to tragedy. The performance takes place on 13 June at 17:00. In addition to performances, TeatroFest offers two theatre workshops organized by LaThéâtral, a Spanish-language theatre and performing arts school, open to participants aged 16 and above. “El juego de actuar” (Acting Play), led by Etienne Vandoorne, is open to all levels and explores stage presence, listening, playfulness, and truth in performance through acting exercises, improvisation, and scenes inspired by major theatrical worlds. The workshop takes place on 13 June at 10:00. “El personaje y el tiempo” (Character and Time), led by Daniel Sieteiglesias, is designed for advanced participants and explores how past, present, and future influence character interpretation. Drawing on the techniques of Sanford Meisner and Ivana Chubbuck, participants will work on using a character’s circumstances and aspirations to serve their objective on stage. The workshop takes place on 13 June at 12:00. Together, these events make TeatroFest a vibrant meeting point for theatre lovers, artists, and anyone curious to experience Spanish-language theatre in Belgium.
