The Embassy of India in Brussels is pleased to invite you to celebrate the International Day of Yoga 2025 at the European Parliament on Saturday, 21 June, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Yoga is an ancient Indian discipline that harmonises the body, mind, and spirit through physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation (dhyana). Rooted in the Sanskrit word “Yuj”, meaning to unite, yoga represents the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness. Its origins trace back over 5,000 years to the Indus Valley civilisation. The foundational text on yoga, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, compiled around the 2nd century BCE, systematised yogic knowledge into eight limbs (ashtanga yoga)—a comprehensive guide to ethical living, self-discipline, physical wellbeing, and spiritual awakening. Over time, various schools of yoga emerged, including Hatha Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, and Jnana Yoga, each offering unique pathways to self-realisation. Beyond its spiritual roots, yoga today is globally embraced for its numerous health benefits. It enhances flexibility, builds strength, reduces stress, and fosters emotional resilience. Modern science continues to affirm its positive impact on cardiovascular health, immunity, and mental clarity. The initiative for "Yoga Day" was taken by India's Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in his 2014 UN address and the related resolution received broad global support, with 177 nations co-sponsoring it in the United Nations General Assembly. Designated by the United Nations as International Day of Yoga, 21 June celebrates this timeless tradition that transcends cultures and borders. It’s the longest day of the year in northern hemisphere. This special event will begin with opening remarks and addresses, followed by a collective session of the Common Yoga Protocol, offering participants an opportunity to experience the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga. The morning will also feature performances and demonstrations of Naad Yoga, meditation, and other traditional practices that promote inner peace, balance, and well-being. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, join us in this inspiring celebration of yoga, unity, and peace in the heart of Europe. Admission is free and open to all. Bring your yoga mats. Let us come together to breathe, stretch, and celebrate the spirit of yoga.
