The Maghreb Orchestra of Brussels makes its debut at Flagey alongside the Brussels Philharmonic and the renowned Moroccan singer Sanaa Marahati, blending the musical traditions of the Maghreb with the Western symphonic world. For this inaugural evening, the new Brussels-based orchestra brings together over thirty musicians under the baton of Tom Cohen, united by a shared musical language: maqam meets harmony, counterpoint meets polyrhythm, East meets West; a dialogue in which Melhoun and Gharnati are reimagined through the composition and textures of the symphony orchestra. The evening brings together the Maghreb Orchestra of Brussels, the strings of the Brussels Philharmonic and the young voices of the Flagey Academy Youth Choir, in a project that combines musical heritage, contemporary creation and the passing on of tradition. Sanaa Marahati, an ambassador for the Moroccan vocal tradition, will lend her voice to this concert. Through her mastery of this heritage, she places Maghreb singing at the heart of this encounter with the symphonic world. With this inaugural concert, the Maghreb Orchestra of Brussels opens up a new musical space in Brussels: a place where cultures, generations and traditions intersect, where North African heritage is viewed as a living force, destined to nourish contemporary creation.
