This Eclectic townhouse with Neoclassical touches was completed in 1897 to the designs of Constant Bosmans and Henri Vandeveld (not to be confused with the famous Modernist architect and designer Henry Van de Velde). These two architects worked together on many buildings in Brussels. For nearly a quarter of a century, they were the preferred architects of the Solvay family of industrialists, for whom they designed a residential castle, office spaces and the famous Solvay Library; moreover, the Tour & Taxis Freight Station and the Léon Lepage Secondary School are also among their achievements. During their careers, they easily moved from one to another of the fashionable architectural styles of the day, including Flemish Neo-Renaissance, Eclecticism, Rationalism and Art Nouveau. This house on Avenue Palmerston bears witness to their mastery of several historicist styles with its sober blue-and-white stone façade with Baroque and Empire decorative touches, its Empire reception room and its Flemish Neo-Renaissance dining room typical of the period, both of which have retained their original, richly carved furniture. Today, the building houses the City of Prague’s Brussels office which is committed to keeping it alive by hosting exhibitions that visitors will be able to see during the guided tours.
