Ethel Lilienfeld

Born in France in 1995 and raised in Brussels, Ethel Lilienfeld’s work questions the growing impact of the virtual body on reality and everyday life. She creates strange images that exacerbate the tension between fantasy and madness. She questions aesthetic standards, social norms and notions of identity and gender. The body plays an important role in most of the artist’s work. Although she uses photography, video installation and film, her installations are nonetheless related to sculpture, and the relationship with the used space is crucial. In her videos, Ethel Lilienfeld works with actors, sets and objects, sometimes drawing on fiction, sometimes on reality.

Ethel Lilienfeld graduated with a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from La Cambre (BE) in 2020, then got her teachers degree in 2021. She continued her work at Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains (FR) between 2021 and 2023. She has recently won several awards: Villa Albertine Grant / Étant Donnés Contemporary Art(2023); PrixFintroPrijs / Prix du Public and Second Jury Prize (2023); Production Grant from the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (2022); Prix du Public, Brussels Videonline Festival #2 at LA CENTRALE (2021); Prix Cocof (French Community Commission) at Médiatine (2021); Prix des Amis de la Cambre (2020).

Ethel joined the KULT XL Ateliers residence in July 2023.
