This large townhouse was built around 1890 to the design of Georges Dhaeyer for the magistrate Charles Campioni-Balasse. It is situated on the corner of the Chaussée d’Haecht and the Rue de l’Est. Completed just three years before the nearby Autrique house (Victor Horta’s first house in Brussels), its Flemish Neo-Renaissance style shows the continued preference for historicist styles among some middle-class inhabitants of Brussels around 1900. Its red-brick facade features a bay window on the corner and stepped gables, and blends Neo-Gothic and Flemish Neo-Renaissance decorative features. The house’s interior has been listed since 2004 because its original layout has been preserved and contains many remarkable decorative features, including painted coffered ceilings, mantlepieces, wall frescoes and stained-glass windows, that make it a hidden gem of historicist architecture in Brussels.
