For decades, American jazz master Fred Hersch has been shaping contemporary jazz with a piano style defined by focus, vulnerability, and lyricism. With The Surrounding Green (2025, ECM Records), he adds a new chapter to his already impressive body of work. His signature velvety touch and flowing piano lines connect original compositions, arrangements, and improvisations into a whole that feels both natural and refined. Together with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Joey Baron, his partners on the album, Hersch brings this music to the stage. With rare ease, the trio unfolds rich, seemingly endless melodies in which no note is superfluous and every nuance matters.
