History

Located in the Leopold district of Ixelles, rue Wiertz leads directly to the European Parliament. Created to accommodate the wealthy social classes, the district was soon taken over by artists such as Jane Graverol and Antoine Wiertz. His studio house (now the Musée Wiertz) and the adjoining garden (now the Jardin des Citoyens) bear witness to the rich artistic life of the period. The district was later transformed to accommodate the European institutions. Often described as a purely institutional area, it is also home to a large number of residents. The re-establishment in 2021 of artists’ studios and an exhibition hall in the district will both reconnect with its history and build a bridge to today’s residents and users, thus looking to the future.

With a total surface area of 150 m2, the exhibition space is spread over two levels. On the ground floor, the main area of 100 m2 is lined with large glass panes on both sides, letting in natural light. A staircase leads down to a smaller space, ideal for showcasing video installations or immersive projects.

Artists-in-residency programmes

The KULT XL Ateliers network counts nine artist studios located in different neighbourhoods of the municipality: seven studios are located at 21a rue Wiertz, one studio is located at 44 rue de l’Automne and another studio is located at 95 rue du Trône.

The network offers up to 2-year residencies for artists based in the Brussels capital region. Residents are selected based on an open call for artists. New calls for artists will be launched depending on the availibility of the studio spaces.

If you have any questions, please check out our FAQ.
