On 10 November, the Instituto Cervantes in Brussels will host an event dedicated to the fight against gender-based violence and the evolution of equality policies in Spain, with a particular focus on one of its most overlooked forms: vicarious violence.
As part of the commemorations marking 40 years of Spain’s membership of the European Union and 50 years of Spain in Freedom, the event will offer an opportunity to reflect on the progress made over recent decades in promoting equality and combating gender-based violence, as well as on Spain’s role in advancing these policies within the European Union.
The event will centre on a screening of 'No estás loca' ('You’re Not Crazy'), a documentary directed by María Bestar. Featuring more than forty testimonies from victims and professionals, the film highlights the impact of vicarious violence and examines the shortcomings of existing protection mechanisms for women and children.
The screening will be followed by a discussion addressing the progress achieved and the challenges that remain, both at national and European level. Participants will include the director, María Bestar; Spain’s Secretary of State for the European Union, Fernando Sampedro; MEP Lina Gálvez, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM); and Isabel Muntané, a feminist journalist specialising in gender-based violence.
