Europe in a New International Order How are major international events shaping the socioeconomic future of the European Union? The world has changed profoundly since the 9/11 attacks. The rise of China, the financial crisis, the pandemic and, more recently, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, have transformed the international landscape. Against this backdrop, Europe faces decisive questions about its place in the world and its future. What lies behind the transformations Europe is undergoing? How are new geopolitical balances affecting our economies and societies? And what decisions will the European Union need to make to face the future? On 28 September, the Instituto Cervantes will host a roundtable discussion on the present and future of the European Union from a socioeconomic perspective. The discussion will take as its starting point 'Las invasiones bárbaras', the new book by Claudi Pérez, which examines some of the major events that have shaped the turbulent course of the 21st century. The panel will feature Claudi Pérez, international correspondent for El País and former Brussels correspondent; Teresa Ribera, First Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; and Marcos Alonso, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Spain to the European Union. The discussion will be moderated by Belgian journalist Lode Delputte, a regular contributor to De Standaard and De Morgen, specialising in international politics. A conversation bringing together journalistic insight, diplomatic experience and the perspective of the European institutions to examine an international landscape in transformation and its consequences for Europe.
