Two of today’s most compelling cellists meet in a recital built around the extraordinary emotional power of the Romantic cello. Aleksey Shadrin takes on Grieg’s only Cello Sonata, a sweeping work of Nordic lyricism, passion and dramatic energy, before Camille Thomas brings her distinctive voice to Brahms’ First Sonata—one of the great pillars of the cello repertoire, where profound intimacy meets the architectural grandeur of Bach. After these two Romantic masterpieces, Thomas offers an unexpected epilogue with Philip Glass’ hauntingly beautiful Truman Sleeps. Its luminous simplicity leaves the music suspended between memory and dream—a contemporary echo of the same intimacy and longing heard in Grieg and Brahms more than a century earlier. Three works, two exceptional artists and one of the cello’s greatest strengths: its ability to make the most deeply felt emotions sound almost human. Immediately following the concert, Camille Thomas will meet audiences for a signing of her latest album dedicated to the music of Philip Glass.
